Ear Tubes

Ear Tubes

What are Ear Tubes?

An ear tube, also known as a grommet, is a small device inserted into the eardrum to facilitate drainage and ventilation of the middle ear space. It serves as an effective solution for reducing the frequency and severity of ear infections while preventing the accumulation of fluid. Ear tubes, also referred to as ventilation tubes, tympanostomy tubes, or pressure equalization tubes, offer significant benefits, including a decreased reliance on oral antibiotics.

Improving Ear Health

Ear tube placement is a commonly performed procedure in the United States, primarily in children. It is recommended for patients who experience recurrent ear infections or persistent fluid behind the eardrum despite multiple courses of antibiotics.

The decision to proceed with ear tubes is based on a clinical diagnosis, taking into consideration the patient’s medical history and physical examination. Prior to any ear surgery, our Century ENT specialists conduct a meticulous microscopic evaluation of the ears in the office. A hearing test may be recommended to provide a comprehensive assessment before surgery.

Surgical Procedure

Ear tube placement is typically performed under general anesthesia at an outpatient surgical center and takes less than 5 minutes. For older children or adults who tolerate the procedure well and have suitable physical examination findings, it may be completed under local anesthesia in our office. Our skilled team will determine the most appropriate approach for each individual patient.

Risks: Your Safety is Our Priority

While ear tube placement is considered a low-risk procedure, it is important to be aware of potential complications. These include pain, bleeding, persistent infection, early or late tube dislodgement, or a perforation in the eardrum that may require future repair. Our experienced Century ENT specialists prioritize your safety and will thoroughly discuss these risks before proceeding with the surgery.
