TREATMENT

Sialendoscopy

What is a Sialendoscopy?

Sialendoscopy is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that is used to evaluate and treat problems of the salivary glands. It is an endoscopic outpatient procedure.

It is used to treat:

  • Small to medium salivary gland stones
  • Salivary gland strictures
  • Recurrent sialadenitis (salivary gland infections/inflammation) following cancer treatment.

Advantages of Sialendoscopy

Sialendoscopy offers several advantages over traditional surgical approaches. By utilizing this minimally invasive technique, your surgeon can often avoid external skin incisions or larger surgeries that carry a risk of nerve injury, potentially impacting facial movement, tongue function, or sensation.

The Procedure

Sialendoscopy typically takes approximately 60-90 minutes and is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, a thin, flexible endoscope equipped with a camera and light is inserted into the duct of the salivary gland to provide a clear image of the gland’s interior. Specialized instruments can then be used to remove or break up any blockages or stones causing symptoms such as discomfort, swelling, or infection.

Post-Operative Care

Following sialendoscopy, patients can return home on the same day and begin an oral diet immediately. Pain is generally limited, and over-the-counter pain medication is usually sufficient for relief. In some cases, a prescription pain medication may be required.

Conclusion: Enhancing Salivary Gland Health

Sialendoscopy is a low-risk procedure that can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of certain salivary gland problems. It can also be utilized as a diagnostic procedure to determine the underlying cause of salivary gland issues. While sialendoscopy may not permanently resolve all salivary gland problems, it plays a crucial role in diagnosing and treating various conditions affecting the salivary glands.
