Globus pharyngeus is the unpleasant feeling of not being able to swallow.
What is Globus Pharyngeus?
Globus pharyngeus, also known as the globus sensation, is a painless sensation in the throat that can be described as a foreign body sensation or tightening or choking sensation. It can be associated with chronic clearing of the throat, hoarseness, and catarrh (build-up of mucus in an airway or cavity of the body).
Symptoms of Globus Pharyngeus
It may be described differently by different people. It could be described as:
- Tightness in the throat or pressure
- You are unable to get rid of catarrh/mucus
- A tender area in your throat
- Feelings of being stuck or having a lump in your throat
You don’t need to be concerned if you feel something stuck in your throat but you can eat and drink normally without any pain. People with globus sensations often feel the symptoms when they swallow their saliva. Or, it can increase stress and worry. You may experience symptoms that vary from one day to the next.
Causes of Globus Pharyngeus
There are many possible causes for globus sensation. The causes of globus sensation will determine the treatment. The most common causes are:
- Pharyngeal inflammation conditions
- Gastroesophageal reflux Disease
- Psychological factors such as anxiety and stress are important
- Abnormal upper esophageal sphincter function
- Rare tumors
- Thyroid disease
- Items previously lodged
- Residue in throat after eating
