What is a Tonsillectomy?

Understanding Tonsillectomy

The tonsils are part of the body’s immune system, although their exact function is not fully understood. It is important to note that the removal of the tonsils and/or adenoids does not result in any changes to the body’s immune system or a loss of ability to fight infection.

Indications for Tonsillectomy

The most common reason for a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy is upper airway obstruction. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids often contribute to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or sleep-disordered breathing symptoms. Other indications for tonsillectomy include chronic or recurrent tonsillitis, a history of peritonsillar abscess, difficulty swallowing, or concerns of malignancy due to asymmetry.

Surgical Procedure

Tonsillectomy is performed under general anesthesia, and the entire operation is conducted through the mouth without any skin incisions. The tonsils are carefully dissected away from the surrounding throat muscles, and electrocautery (heat) is used to control bleeding. The procedure typically lasts less than 30 minutes.

Post-Operative Care

After the procedure, your surgeon will provide specific instructions regarding post-operative pain control. Pain management may involve a combination of over-the-counter and prescription medications. It is normal to experience pain when swallowing and have reduced oral intake immediately following surgery.
