Stapedotomy for Otosclerosis

TREATMENT

Stapedotomy for Otosclerosis

What is a Stapedotomy for Otosclerosis?

Stapedotomy is a surgical procedure to improve hearing by removing one of the ear bones that is not vibrating appropriately and replacing it with a prosthetic (artificial) ear bone.

A stapedotomy is performed to treat a condition called Otosclerosis. Otosclerosis occurs when one of the three small hearing bones hardens and does not vibrate well enough to transmit sound to the brain. This results in “conductive” or “mechanical” hearing loss.

What are the Symptoms?

  • Progressive hearing loss in one or both ears
  • Difficult hearing low pitched sounds
  • Tinnitus, or ringing, in the affected ear

Risk Factors

  • Approximately 60% of patients with Otosclerosis have an underlying genetic cause.
  • There is a predominance in women over men, but anyone can develop otosclerosis.
  • It commonly occurs in patients in their 20s or 30s.
  • This type of hearing loss may accelerate in pregnant women.

Diagnosis

To confirm the presence of Otosclerosis, your dedicated surgeon at Century ENT will utilize various diagnostic tools, including audiograms, physical ear exams, and potentially a CT scan. These steps will help determine the most appropriate course of treatment, including surgical intervention if required.

Treatment

Currently, there is no medication proven to reverse or cure Otosclerosis. However, Century ENT offers effective treatment options tailored to your specific needs. For individuals who are not suitable candidates for surgery or prefer non-surgical approaches, we provide hearing aids customized for the affected ear(s) to enhance your hearing capabilities.

Surgery

Our skilled surgeons perform stapedotomy at Century ENT when surgical intervention is necessary. This outpatient procedure, conducted under general anesthesia, usually takes less than an hour to complete, with minimal side effects. During the surgery, the hardened bone is replaced with a prosthetic (artificial) ear bone, restoring proper vibrations for improved hearing. The stapedotomy procedure is typically performed entirely through the ear canal, eliminating the need for external incisions.
