Hearing Loss In Adults

Your Century Ear, Nose & Throat doctor will evaluate the cause of your hearing loss by examining your ears with high powered microscopic visualization, a physical exam, and possibly a hearing test called an audiogram. A custom treatment plan will be provided depending on your type of hearing loss.

What Are the Symptoms of Hearing Loss?

It isn’t always easy to tell when your hearing is declining because it’s often gradual; however, here are some telltale signs that it’s time to visit the Doctors Hearing Center at our practice.

  • You’re having trouble hearing people in loud settings
  • You blast the television or radio
  • Certain voices particularly women and children seem muffled
  • You find yourself saying ‘Huh/’ or asking people to repeat what they said

Types of Hearing Loss

It is important to understand there are two different categories of hearing loss.

Sensorineural hearing loss

Sensorineural hearing loss (or nerve hearing loss) is a hearing loss that is due to a problem of the inner ear, specifically with the cochlea’s ability to activate the hearing nerve.

Conductive hearing loss

The other type of hearing loss is known as conductive hearing loss. This type of hearing loss is often due to an anatomic or structural dysfunction of the outer ear or middle ear. This may be due to a problem with the ear canal, eardrum, or hearing bones. Possible causes include cerumen impaction, large eardrum perforations, or chronic infections involving the middle ear space and hearing bones.

Oftentimes, these problems may be amenable to surgery to fix the underlying problem. It is important to schedule a visit with an Otolaryngologist to discuss these options.

However, if surgical correction of the underlying problem is not possible, there are other options to treat conductive hearing loss.

After a Century ENT provider examines your ear anatomy, they will likely recommend audiology testing to determine the severity and specificity of your hearing loss.  Century makes efforts to make this testing available same day if possible or can be scheduled separately from your visit.
